Every RBI rule your recovery agent must follow

Sourced from the RBI Responsible Business Conduct Directions 2025 (effective July 2026 for banks) and their 2026 amendments. Each rule below is what our Evidence Locker tags violations against.

No anonymous calls

RBC-J4(4)

Agents must identify themselves, their employer, and the lender they represent on every contact.

Contact hours protected

RBC-J4(5)

No recovery communication between 20:00 and 08:00 IST, and no contact on national holidays.

No harassment of relatives

RBC-J4(6)

Agents may contact family members only in narrow, lender-defined circumstances — never to pressure you.

No false debt claims

RBC-J4(8)

Stating amounts, consequences, or legal actions that are untrue is a reportable violation.

Agent ID mandatory

Identification rule

Every agent carries and produces identification with the lender's name on request.

No public shaming

Privacy rule

Agents may not discuss your debt with neighbors, employers, or on social media.

Glossary

Plain-language debt terms

One Time Settlement (OTS)
An agreement between you and your lender where you pay less than the total outstanding amount to close the loan permanently.
Waiver
A reduction in the total amount you owe to your lender, expressed as a percentage.
Equated Monthly Installment
The fixed payment amount you make every month to your lender until the loan is fully repaid.
Credit Information Bureau of India Limited
India's first credit bureau, maintains your credit report which affects your ability to get new credit.
Recovery Agent
A person or agency appointed by a lender to recover outstanding dues. Must follow RBI guidelines.
Harassment
Any behavior by a recovery agent that violates RBI Responsible Business Conduct Directions — including calls at odd hours, contacting relatives, or using abusive language.
No Objection Certificate
A document issued by your lender confirming they have no objection to your loan being closed or settled.
Tax Deducted at Source
Tax deducted by the lender on the waived amount exceeding ₹15,000, as per Section 56(IV) of the Income Tax Act.
Days Past Due
The number of days your EMI payment is overdue. 0 DPD means on time, 30+ DPD means significantly overdue.
